Logistical Information

The GRT School will be held on site at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. On Monday, October 1, and Tuesday, October 2 we will be in Bldg. 6008, Room 133; for the remainder of the week we will be in Bldg. 5200, Room 214. Both of these locations, and the location of the ORNL dormitory are highlighted on the site map.

Computer Setup Requirements

In order to get the most out of this school, we request that all participants come with a laptop prepared to install and run all of the software related to gamma-ray tracking for the hands-on activities in the afternoons.

To this end, students should either:

(a) Recommended!! --> Download and setup the virtual machine configured as required for the school (details below), or

(b) Ensure working installations of:

  • gcc4.7 or later;

  • zlib;

  • scons;

  • make;

  • cmake (required for ROOT and GEANT4 installation);

  • ROOT version 5.34;

  • Python2.7;

  • GEANT4.10.3 or later (current production version is GEANT4.10.4.p02);

  • mayavi2, FreeWRL (or equivalent, for GEANT4 visualization)

Virtual Machine (VM) Installation

To use VM we've prepared you'll need to install VirtualBox, which is available for a wide range of platforms. First, download the latest version for your platform at VirtualBox at https://www.virtualbox.org/, and follow the instructions for installation on your operating system.

You'll also need to download and save the virtual hard drive -- it's a sizeable file (~27GB uncompressed), downloadable here. Also note, you need to unzip (uncompress) the file before you can use it. (If you do not have hard-drive space, you can install and run the VM from an external hard-drive.)

To then attach and configure the VM for the GRT school, follow these directions:

1) Open VirtualBox, and click on 'New'

2) Give the VM a Name (your choice), and then select Type = 'LINUX' and Version = 'Other Linux (64-bit)'. Click 'Next'.

3) Set the RAM (memory) for the VM -- your choice, but at least 1024 MB (1 GB) is recommended. Click 'Next'.

4) Select 'Use an existing virtual hard drive file'. To the right of the field with the word "Empty", click the file icon and navigate to the location of the VM image you downloaded from here. Select this, and click 'Open'. Then click 'Create'.

5) Now select the VM you just created (it'll appear in the left side of the VirtualBox window), and click 'Start' (green arrow) along the top menu.

6) You can log into the VM with the username "grtschool" and password "gammas".

** The VM has been tested on Windows 10, and MacOS High Sierra (10.13.15/16). If you do have problems with installation, please contact hlcrawford@lbl.gov.
